Traumatised PPA says, departure of MLAs not the end of the party

ITANAGAR, Dec 20:  Peoples' Party of Arunachal has said that it is passing through a yet another great traumatic phase.

"The departure of party legislators from the party should not be seen as the end of the era of regional party in the state. If this tribal state has to see better days ahead, the onus lies only in a party with regional character and sentiments, commented Kamen Ringu, Chairman, CWC, PPA.

The party which had gone to the Assembly Election promising strict implementation of Anti Defection Law in the State is found to be abusing the same law by joining another party which it had condemned to be steeped in deep corruption" he said.

Working towards economic independence of state with a sincere effort for grant of Article 371A status to the state shall be our prime agenda, besides working towards peaceful solution of interstate boundary, ILP and refugee issues. At this hour of crisis, the party seeks support from all corners in our appeal to condemn such nasty betrayals", said Kahfa Bengia, Interim President, PPA.

"I fail to understand how this unfortunate defection of our legislators into INC Party is going to help a Govt. which is already reeling under severe financial crisis. However, I wish their joining the Tuki Government shall add quality to the Government instead of just quantity", added Ringu.

Murkongselek-Psg BG railway stalemate continues

Correspondent

RUKSIN, Dec 20: Adi Baane Kebang (ABK) is making all out efforts to break the impasse on the proposed Broad Gauge (extended) railway passing through East Siang and Dibang Valley districts.

The much-hyped broad gauge railway line is facing opposition from the locals as the project is likely to adversely affect the people in East Siang district. Some sections of people in East Siang district opposed the passing of the proposed railway line through the proposed (new) alignment and urged the railway authority to construct the BG railway line as per the survey conducted in 1968 or 1974.

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) conducted a survey for construction of the BG track linking Murkongselek and Pasighat town during September 2011. The project engineer of the extended BG railway project during November last year informed that they would execute the work as per the new alignment. But the work, which was scheduled to be completed last year, has not yet started due to stiff opposition from some sections of the local people.  The people, who are opposing the railway, said that the proposed railway line is likely to affect hundreds of poor farmers of East Siang district. The latest survey for construction of the BG railway line carried out by NF Railway covers a large portion of horticulture gardens belonging to indigenous farmers of the district.

Another section, who voiced their opposition against the railway connectivity to Pasighat, cited various reasons like influx of illegal migrants, impact of Inner Line Pass (ILP) mechanism and probable change in the demographic pattern in the region.

The ABK has already conducted a 'consultative meeting' with the Railway Affected Land Owners' Committee (RALOC) of Pasighat and discussed the issue thoroughly. It finally constituted a committee to gather consensus of the stakeholders regarding construction of hydropower project and BG railway in Siang belt.

ABK sources said the committee led by the state's Hydropower Under Secretary, Tai Taggu is in action to collect public opinion from different places. The outcome is expected after February 15 next year, said the sources.

On the other hand, majority of the Government officers, elected leaders and elite society members of the district have supported the railway project and opined that railway is the cheapest means of transport and is vital for national security and industrial development of the local people.

According to them, export and import trading can be boost up through rail connectivity, while it will help in development of industries in the area.

The proposed railway project is an extension of Rangiya-Murkongselek (Assam) route under NFR, which has been suspended for an indefinite period due to the gauge conversion and extension works.

ITANAGAR, Dec 20: Students from North-East and activists from North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) demonstrated today at Jantar Mantar, Delhi, against the continued enforcement of the draconian legislation, Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).

The activists spoke of the unconstitutional nature of the legislation and how it was being used to suppress the democratic aspirations of people across the country. At the protest, NEFIS representative, Chinglen Khumukcham, argued that the legislation's enforcement across various states in the country and the unwillingness of successive governments to initiate a debate on the floor of the house on the question of AFSPA's enforcement,  was indicative of the fact that in reality the Indian state readily uses a large section of its armed forces to suppress the voice of its own citizens rather than foreign infiltrators.

As the protest persisted, a delegation went to submit a memorandum at the Office of the Speaker (Lok Sabha), demanding an immediate debate on the Armed Forces Special Powers Act before the close of the winter session, i.e. 22 December.
